Maphilindo Silat

Guro Dan Inosanto teaches Silat

Guro Suzanne Spezzano teaches Madjapahit Silat

The names Silat, Madjapahit Silat, Pencak Silat, Kali Silat, and Bersilat are all names used to describe the devastating and brutal martial arts of the South East Asian Archipelago. Silat can be found in Indonesia, Malaysia, Southern Philippines, Singapore, Southern Thailand and Southern Burma. Traditional practitioners of Silat are very hard to find and they teach their arts in secret. These arts were designed for survival in real combat, not for tournaments. Some Silat systems specialize in close-quarter combat from a standing position, while others specialize in ground fighting, taking the attacker to the ground and using strikes, pressure points and joint locks. Many Silat systems are designed for multiple opponents, moving quickly from one opponent to another, or simultaneously defending against more than one opponent. However, there is one style of Silat that exists that is modernized and designed for the reality of the street, known as Maphilindo Silat.

Maphilindo Silat was founded by Guro Dan Inosanto, and is based on the various systems of Silat he has studied under Silat masters from Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. Maphilindo combines these Silat styles, using empty hand strikes, off-balancing, kicks, punches, elbows, knees and nerve strikes. Guro Inosanto created this system to honor his Silat instructors. Guro Adrian Tandez is one of a select few in the United States certified by Guro Inosanto to teach this amazing art.
